Why Fall Sessions are Popular | Richmond Hill Senior Photographer

Want to know why FALL SESSIONS are so popular for both seniors and families? Here’s 4 reasons why:

1. The Weather: it’s not too hot (fingers crossed here in GA) and definitely not too cold, so it’s the Goldie Locks approved season for senior and family portraits. You won’t have to worry about sweating from heat or having a red nose from the cold… it’s just right.

2. Fall Fashion: if boots, scarves, sweaters, and jackets are your thing, a senior or family fall session is your perfect option. Layers make an outfit super dynamic and the season for a perfectly layered wardrobe is definitely the fall.

3. The Fall Colors: close your eyes and imagine your portraits were taken with warmer tones, some falling leaves, and maybe a pumpkin or two. In love with the idea of how it looks? If so, fall is the perfect session season for your senior or family session!

4. No Rush: A fall senior session gives you plenty of time to have prints, graduation announcements, and gifts back well before graduation rolls around. Scheduling early in the fall also allows families to have Christmas cards printed and ready before the holiday rush, which equals less stress (always a good thing).

Tips for Photographing Active Kids | Richmond Hill Child Photographer

If you’re a parent, you probably understand the concept of never-ending energy better than anyone else. Your kids are always on the go and keeping busy, which is great when you need them to entertain themselves, but not always ideal when it’s time for your professional portrait session. If you’re looking to update your family portraits and capture a few new shots of your active children, here are a few ideas to help ease the stress.

Head outside. In order to capture a few candid shots of your child, get them outside where they can burn off some of that excess energy. Not only will the outdoors provide you with a great backdrop but once your child is feeling less energetic, you’ll have the chance to capture some beautiful images of them spending time outside.

Turn it into a game. Sometimes the best way to get children to cooperate is to turn the session into a game. Let them dance to their favorite music or engage them in a game of I Spy with My Little Eye. Using a prop or two is another great way to make the experience more fun.

Do what they love. Does your child love to play outside in the garden? Perhaps playing dress up and make-believe is more their thing? Whatever your child loves to do, embrace it and use it in your next portrait session. Chances are they will be far more willing to cooperate if they’re doing something they love.

Take breaks. Small children have short attention spans, so be sure to take frequent breaks during your session to allow them to run and explore before asking them to be active participants again.

Let go of expectations. This is my biggest tip. Heading into a portrait session with any sort of expectations + young kiddos can be a recipe for disaster. I promise the time will come when your little one will sit nicely and smile at the camera, but until then, it’s best to go with the flow. Your professional photographer is used to working with kids, so try not to worry too much – we’ve seen it all! If you’re relaxed and having fun rest assured your child will, too.

How to Mix and Match Frame Styles | Richmond Hill Photographer

While it may seem daunting, mixing and matching frame styles is definitely possible and a wall collage allows you to enjoy many of your favorite images from your session. High in quality and craftsmanship, framed wall art pieces are a classic and timeless choice.

Here are 6 tips when it comes to mixing and matching frame styles in a wall collage:

1. Use pictures from the same session to tell a story. Images from the same session that share similar tones and colors can create a unifying theme, even if the frames are different. For instance, frame images of each child and family member or senior portraits that highlight their personality.

2. Choose your statement piece. Select the main image you want to highlight as the focal point and pair it with your favorite frame.

3. Same moulding/frame, different color. Find a frame style that offers mouldings in various, complimentary colors. We recommend starting by only pairing 2 colors together. Make the second-largest frame a different color from the first. This method can create a beautiful, cohesive look on any wall.

4. Experiment with different mouldings/frames. This one requires trust in your own interior design abilities (or that of your photographer), but it’s very doable! Don’t feel you have to make it all the same frame, mix it up by selecting 2 or 3 styles that feel cohesive to give your display character and detail. Pick your favorite frame style to be the large statement piece, then select a complementary style to pair with it. Or, select frames of similar colors, such as different styles but all in black.

5. Don’t forget the mat. Mats can be the unsung heroes of this whole process. By adding a mat, you can help draw attention to your images. Mats help anchor your layout visually.

6. Experiment with sizes and orientations. These are a couple more variables that can help your layout stand out and give it visual interest. Select an alternate orientation with a thinner frame to enhance or complement your main statement piece.

With a little ingenuity and patience, it is possible to create a timeless, gorgeous wall collage with different frames. Have fun!

How Often Should I Update My Family Portraits? | Richmond Hill Family Photographer

Wondering how often you should update your family portraits? This is what you need to know.

Busy schedules, family commitments, and lengthy to-do lists mean families don’t always find the time to update their family portraits.

The years also seem to be going by faster and faster, which is especially true when you have children. As parents, you don’t want to miss the chance to capture your child’s milestones or how much you’ve changed as a family.

So, how often should you be updating your family portraits? Ideally, you should aim for once every year, and here’s why:

How Often Should I Update My Family Porrtraits

Future Generations. While you are taking photos for yourself, you are also making sure that future generations have amazing images that they can look back on, too. Your children and grandchildren will thank you for it, trust us. 😉

Make Memories. By making a point of updating your family portraits on a regular basis, you’re taking the time to be with your family and create new memories. You never know when your family dynamics could change so capture those special moments whenever you can.

Brings You Family Together. Beautiful images remind families of their love for one another – pictures illicit joy and warm feelings. In times of trouble, family portraits can bring comfort and help heal wounds.

Time isn’t Guaranteed. We dislike mentioning it, but life happens. You never know when the last opportunity for family portraits will come. Please do not take for granted the time you have together.

Professional Images Last a Lifetime. While we are a society that is constantly snapping photos on our phones and uploading them to social media, investing in professional portraits gives you a completely different result. Not only will a professional know how to compose and edit each image to perfection, but theirs are the highest quality and are perfect to print for wall art, albums, and family gifts.

Document Your Family’s Growth. You never realize how quickly your kids are growing until you look back at pictures of them or you run into someone who hasn’t seen them in a while. By updating your family portraits annually, you can document your family’s growth, creating a beautiful series of portraits you will treasure forever.

When was the last time you had family portraits taken? Is it time for an update? Fall is a popular time – be sure to schedule early for the best availability.
